Gifts for Medical School Graduates

Medical school is a marathon, not a sprint. Congratulate the favorite medical student in your life with a thoughtful and useful gift this May!

Some of our best ideas are listed below. Like Goop gift guides, we are providing a range of ideas and price points for both enjoyment perusing and practicality.

  1. Normatec compression boots. If they’re going into a surgical residency (but honestly, all residents are on their feet all day) I highly recommend the normatec compression boots. Yes, they’re for elite athletes, but if you have been in a 16-hour head and neck case, then you know the pain of trying to get a few hours’ sleep with painful venous congestion. Some residents even run marathons during training, in which case these are doubly practical. These saved my legs during training and beyond – I still use them routinely after 5+ mile walks and runs.
  1. Lele Sadoughi headband and accessories. These headbands, which come in a variety of colors and materials including leather and neoprene, make the perfect addition to any clinic outfit. They have adorable hair clips as well that are sure to garner compliments!
  1. Customizable pens. These make great gifts and are incredibly helpful for residency training. They can be customized with your new name and degree listed as well! And because they come in bulk, it won’t be a heartbreak to lose or break one. Make it slightly more difficult for people to swipe your favorite pens at work.
  1. Lettuce grow! For any med school graduate with a green thumb, or looking to build one – this is a vertical garden. It’s self-watering and self-fertilizing and only requires about 5 minutes of care per week. Both space and time-efficient, this makes a perfect gift for a young physician.
  1. Lyric massager. This is a handheld massage gun that is easy to use, store, and transport. Residents can keep this on their coffee table for accessibility after the inevitably long workdays. It’s a more wallet-friendly alternative to the also popular and wonderful Theragun line of products.
  1. A meditation pillow. This is a thoughtful gift to enhance any meditation practice. Having a dedicated space, however small, for routine meditations (and waking up 10 minutes earlier every day to use it) can make a massive difference in mental health while new graduates learn to navigate residency training.
  1. “The martini” emotional detox bath soak. A Himalayan pink salt bath soak that is the perfect antidote after a long day of work.
  1. Incredible stationary and office supplies! This is one of my favorite spots to shop any and all home office supplies, planners, and paper materials. For the meticulous new grad – consider grid pattern sticky notes, or these clean aesthetic, easy-to-use weekly planners.
  1. Hermes notebook covers. More of a splurge, but a beautiful and durable luxe gift if you’re looking at this price point.
  1. Women’s fitted long white coat. Ever wonder if there are any white coats that aren’t completely box-shaped and formless? Wonder no more. I used this one during residency and, over a pair of ill-fitting hospital scrubs, it immediately elevates and polishes your look (even if you’re running on one hour of sleep, haven’t washed your hair, etc.).
